MY STORY
I went into psychiatry with a dream of improving people’s lives overall, not of just trying medication after medication.
Hi! I’m Ashley Collins
As a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of working with patients from all walks of life, helping them navigate complex mental health challenges. My journey into psychiatry began with an undergraduate degree in Biology, followed by my service in the Army Reserve Nurse Corps. After completing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and working as a registered nurse, I went on to earn my second MSN, becoming a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My clinical experience has been rich and diverse—spanning work with individuals aged 4 to 94, and treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, psychosis, and addiction.
But beyond the credentials, what drives me is something deeper. From the age of 8, I was raised by my father, an engineer with a natural curiosity. He taught me to examine how things work from the inside out, instilling in me an analytical approach to life. This way of thinking sparked my deep interest in science and medicine.
I experienced severe social anxiety as a child, and symptoms of PTSD into adulthood—while I was able to overcome these challenges on my own, I often wonder how much easier my childhood could have been with proper support. Additionally, my husband has faced lifelong challenges with ADHD, which affected his academic performance despite testing at a genius level in elementary school. It wasn't until after college that he sought treatment, and witnessing the transformation in his ability to focus, achieve his goals, and the significant boost his self-esteem was truly eye-opening for me. These experiences profoundly shaped my approach to psychiatry. They taught me the importance of addressing emotional wounds early, treating my patients with respect, not judgment, and believing their lived experiences.
Although we served in different units, my husband and I did end up at the same base for a field training exercise
As a former gymnast, handstand photos have become a bit of a vacation souvenir
My passion for nutrition and a healthy lifestyle began when I met my husband, who was a personal trainer at the time. Transitioning from the standard American diet (SAD) to a paleo diet gave me new health and energy, inspiring me to continue my wellness journey. One of the most defining moments of my life was a near-death experience, which reaffirmed my belief in the power of holistic healing; when modern medicine told me I couldn’t be cured, nutrient-dense foods cured me. Nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes play a significant role in mental health, and I integrate these elements into my practice along with medication and psychotherapy.
While serving in the Army Reserve, I worked alongside soldiers who struggled with PTSD. Tragically, some decided to end their lives rather than continue fight their psychological demons. This solidified my commitment to mental health care. It inspired me to dedicate my life to helping others find resilience and healing, especially children and adolescents.
Becoming a mother has profoundly influenced my work as a psychiatric provider. We are entrusted with these incredible little humans full of potential, and as parents, it’s our job to guide them into becoming strong, capable adults (It’s a little overwhelming, right?).
I chose the name "Armor" for my practice because I want to help children "arm" themselves with the tools needed to face life’s inevitable challenges. I achieve this by teaching effective coping skills, promoting self-care through nutrition and lifestyle changes, and offering medication management when necessary.
Outside of my practice, I’m a proud mother to two kiddos, and I share my life with two dogs and my husband who is an Army officer currently stationed across the country. My Christian faith is an important part of who I am, and it guides the compassionate care I strive to provide although I work with people from all faiths and walks of life. You’ll often find me at local festivals with my family, staying active at the gym, or fighting an unending war with my dogs to stay off the furniture.
